Entering into Stillness - Meditation on the Pause Between Breaths
“At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.” ~ T.S. Eliot

Hello and welcome!
In this meditation, we're moving into a meditation that brings us into a deeper awareness and stillness - a meditation on the pause between breaths. In the pause between breaths, there are no thoughts, simply awareness - T.S. Eliot's "stillpoint of the turning world."
Here, in a nutshell, are some of the emotional, cognitive, and heart-centred benefits of regular meditation.
Emotional Benefits:
- Reduces feelings of negative mood, sadness, anger, tension
- Decreases anxiety, depression, increases pain tolerance, increases empathy
- Reduces stress, blood pressure and fear, as it decreases size of amygdala, the area of the brain that is more active during emotional and fear-inducing events.
- Improves ability to think more clearly - the activity in the pre-frontal cortex increases, the area of the brain responsible for making executive decisions and good judgement.
Cognitive Benefits:
- Improves memory, self-awareness and goal setting
- Changes brain size. After 8 weeks of meditation, brain density increases in areas associated with learning, memory retention and emotional regulation.
Benefits for the Heart:
- Increases heart rate variability, important to reduce stress and increase willpower
